→New Zealand has been considered a mostly safe and tolerant place with low levels of gun violence and was named the 2nd most peaceful country in the world by Global Peace Index in 2019….But, It’s a matter of Sorrow that, in the year of this declaration by Global peace Index (GPI).
Two Serially mass shootings occurred at mosques in a terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday Prayer on 15 March 2019. The attack, carried out by a single gunman who entered both mosques, began at the Al Noor Mosque in the suburb of Riccarton at 1:40 p.m. and continued at Linwood Islamic Centre at
1:52 p.m. He killed 51
people and injured 40.
Finally, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described it as “one of New Zealand’s darkest days”. The government
established a royal commission of inquiry into its security agencies in the
wake of the shootings, which was the deadliest in modern New Zealand history…👌

→He is Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian man..He Charged with murder in relation to the attack.
He grew up in Grafton,
New South Wales and attended Grafton, High School. He worked as a
personal trainer in his hometown from (2009 to 2011). Since 2012, he visited a number of countries in Asia and
Europe…. He said he is racist but not
xenophobic. He supported Brexit and admitted that
he is a fascist. He is thought to have become inquisitive with terrorist attacks committed by Islamic
extremists in 2016 and 2017 and started planning an attack about two years
prior to the shootings, and chose his targets three months in advance…🙉
An interesting thing that,
DCS of New zealand JOHN PRICE told NEWSHUB that police have found evidence from CCTV footage that accused’s vehicle had
been parked around the road from the mosque before 15 March.
However, PRICE also state that police found no evidence to show or support the claim against
Tarrant that he had entered the mosque grounds before the attack🙊
Noted That: Police recovered Six Guns from him…🙈
LETS KNOW ABOUT POLICE OPERATION(Whakahaumanu ):
→Shortly after the attack, New Zealand Police launched Operation
Whakahaumanu. The operation was designed to reassure New Zealanders after the attack and to also
investigate possible threats who shared a similar ideology to the gunman. Police increased visibility in streets and visited many schools, businesses, and religious places as part of the operation.
LEGAL PROCEEDINGS (BRIEFLY) :
→ The District Court of Christchurch on 16 March, charged him with one count of murder. The judge ordered the courtroom closed to the public except
for accredited media, and allowed the accused to be filmed and photographed on the condition that
his face be potty andthe case was transferred to the High Court and he was granted in
custody, as his lawyer did not seek bail.
On 14 june 2019,
Through his lawyer, he pleaded not guilty to engaging in a terrorist act, 51 counts of murder, and 40 counts of attempted murder. Mental health
assessments had indicated no issues regarding his fitness to plead or stand
trial. The trial start date was set for 4 May 2020😲
On 26 march 2020,
He pleaded guilty to all 92 charges: one
of engaging in a terrorist act, 51 of murder, and 40 of attempted murder and Due to the world wide COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the general
public was barred from the hearing.
However, The judge
convicted Tarrant on all charges and granted him in custody to award
sentences…Having been convicted for murder
involving multiple deaths, Tarrant faces a mandatory sentence of life
imprisonment with the possibility of parole being granted after 17 years
(unless in the circumstances such a
sentence would be manifestly unjust)..
Notes: Prior to the shootings, the longest
non-parole period imposed for murder in New Zealand has been 30 years, for a triple murder in 2001; no person has ever been sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.🙊
Now, SENTENCING CYCLE:
→Sentencing began on 24 August 2020 before Justice Cameron Mander at the Christchurch High Court, and is expected to last four days. Capacity in the main courtroom was limited to comply with social distancing requirements of COVID-19 alert, with the proceedings livestreamed to seven other courtrooms to accommodate victims and media.
CONCLUSION :-
→The Christchurch gunman’s surprise guilty plea makes him the first person convicted of terrorism in New Zealand.
My assessment is that there are about 150 to 300 core right-wing activists in New Zealand. This might sound modest – but proportionate to population, it’s similar to extremist numbers in Germany.
Brenton Tarrant also planned to burn down the mosques, wanting to “inflict as many fatalities as possible”.
The Australian has pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 attempted murders and one charge of terrorism.
Tarrant, 29, faces life in prison, possibly without parole – a sentence never before imposed in New Zealand.
Finally, He was confronted by survivors and relatives of the victims in court on Monday….(On 24 August 2020).👌👌👌
